Justice Michael Pembroke was educated at the Universities of Sydney and Cambridge where he studied History, French and Government. Intending to become a diplomat but instead turning to the law, he was appointed a judge of the Supreme Court of New South Wales in 2010. The son and the father of army officers, Pembroke's father was an infantry platoon commander in Korea and awarded the Military Cross for his role in a battle described as 'one of the finest infantry battalion attacks in British History'.
He has lived and travelled extensively throughout the world, including East Asia, and in 2016 travelled through North Korea from the Yalu River on the Manchurian border to the demilitarised zone in the south. Justice Pembroke's 2013 historical biography Arthur Phillip - Sailor, Mercenary, Governor, Spy was shortlisted for the Prime Minister's Literary Awards and a runner-up for the National Maritime Museum History award. His current book on the history of the Korean Peninsula - Korea, Where the American Century Began - was released nationally in 2018.
