Applications for the Anzac Memorial Veteran Artist in Residence 2023/24 program are now open. The frequently asked questions below provide important guidance on the residency and application process.
What are the objectives of the residency?
The intent of the program is to:
- Support and promote veterans who wish to pursue the arts, either personally and/or professionally
- Create opportunities for experienced emerging contemporary service personnel and veteran artists to engage with the Anzac Memorial, its architecture, history and collection to provide new and creative perspectives on Australian military service and/or memorialisation
- Allow veterans a place to reflect on service and sacrifice and to ensure that contemporary military experience is interpreted for today’s audiences
- Encourage engagement with visitors to the Memorial, providing a platform for dialogue with veterans
- Encourage visitation by providing an opportunity for the public to view an evolution of artwork
- Raise the profile of the Memorial as an active space for veterans, aligning with the original intent for the building.
What does the residency provide?
There is a small grant attached to the Residence up to $5,000 to assist a guest veteran artist (or group) to develop their work. The residency provides access to staff expertise, behind the scenes access to the building and the collection.
The project will also receive promotion across the Anzac Memorial and NSW Office for Veterans Affairs digital channels (website, newsletter and social media). There will be scope to explore how these digital channels can be leveraged to complement the project.
As the Anzac Memorial has limited space, material and resource capacity interested applicants are encouraged to email manager@anzacmemorial.nsw.gov.au to arrange a time to discuss any spatial or material requirements before submitting an application.
What are the residency requirements?
- Dates for the Residency will be mutually agreed upon.
- The artist retains copyright and title in all work created during the Residency but with the right to use of images of these works by the Anzac Memorial for promotional purposes as part of the Residency Agreement.
- The recipient is required to deliver at least one community engagement program, such as an exhibition, performance, workshop or lecture and be willing to participate in video and media interviews.
- The recipient must be able to take the Residency prior to 30 June 2024.
- Successful recipients will enter into a formal contract with mutually agreed time frames and outcomes.
- At the conclusion of the Residency, recipients agree to complete a brief about their project and an evaluation of the program. The report will assist with ongoing evaluation of the program and is due one month following the completion of the Residency program.
Who is eligible?
The program is open to creative practitioners who have served in the Australian Defence Force and preference may be given to applicants from New South Wales. Applicants must be an Australian citizen or have permanent resident status in Australia.
There are no educational prerequisites but applicants should have considerable experience as a maker/creator and be able to demonstrate a capacity to communicate their artwork to a general audience which includes children if there is an exhibition element.
The applicant must be able to spend at least a portion of the program in residence at the Anzac Memorial, located in Sydney prior to 30 June 2024.
Do you accept applications from other artists who have not served in the Australian Defence Force?
This program is designed specifically for veterans (serving and ex-serving) being anyone who is, or has, served in the Australian Defence Force.
Do I have to work in a specific artistic medium to apply?
Any artform will be considered including visual arts, music, literature, dance, theatre and digital artforms, noting that there is no dedicated studio available at the Memorial (see “What does the residency provide?” question for more detail).
How long am I expected to be in residence at the Anzac Memorial?
We ask that the successful applicant spends at least a portion of the program at the Anzac Memorial prior to the 30 June 2024. Dates for the residency will be mutually agreed upon and will be dependent on space requirements, other programs and bookings and the applicant’s availability.
Can I use the grant to fund work that has or will be completed before taking up the residency?
The Veteran Artist in Residence program does not fund retrospectively. This means you cannot apply to fund any work that has been or will be completed prior to a successful placement.
Who will be assessing my application?
Applications for the Anzac Memorial Veteran Artist in Residence program are assessed by a committee which is comprised of Anzac Memorial Management, a veteran representative and industry peers.
How will my application be assessed?
