Battle of the CORAL SEA began. This was a series of separate but related battles between several groups of US, Australian and Japanese ships. The Japanese were attempting to seize Port Moresby. This battle is unique in that the opposing forces never came in sight of, of fired upon, each other; all of the action against ships was carried out by aircraft. The battle was significant in that it was the first failure for the Japanese in a major action
