A life raft carrying the remains of a corpse was discovered on Christmas Island, believed to be that of a crew member from HMAS Sydney. The body was brought ashore and buried, but the grave’s location was lost during the Japanese occupation of the island. Re-discovered in 2006, the remains were exhumed and underwent extensive DNA testing, confirming the sailor's identity as Able Seaman Thomas Clark. He is now interred in the Commonwealth War Graves section of Geraldton Cemetery in Western Australia.
