British troops, including a portion of the Waikato militia recruited in Australia, besieged 300 Māori in their pa (fort) at Orakau, New Zealand, during the Māori Wars. The Māori attempted to break out but were hunted down. Up to 160 Māori were killed and 33 taken prisoner. British casualties were sixteen killed and 52 wounded.

Formation of the Australian Air Force. Later, on 13 August and following approval from the King, the Governor General signed an order authorising the use of ‘Royal’ making this the start date for the use of the Royal Australian Air Force, or RAAF, name.
